The RFA Procedure: Step by Step

Step 2 — Catheter Insertion: Using ultrasound guidance, your specialist inserts a thin catheter into the diseased vein through a tiny incision (about the size of a pinhole). No general anesthesia or stitches are required.
Step 3 — Tumescent Anesthesia: A dilute local anesthetic solution is injected around the vein. This numbs the area, protects surrounding tissue from heat, and compresses the vein around the catheter.
Step 4 — Energy Delivery: The catheter is slowly withdrawn along the length of the vein while emitting radiofrequency energy in controlled pulses. The heat (typically around 120°C) causes the vein wall to collapse and seal.
Step 5 — Post-Procedure: A compression bandage or stocking is applied. The entire procedure typically takes 30-60 minutes. You'll walk out of the office the same day.
Recovery and Results
Recovery from RFA is remarkably quick. Most patients return to light activities the same day and resume full normal activities within 1-2 days. You'll be instructed to wear compression stockings for 1-2 weeks and avoid strenuous exercise or prolonged sitting during this time.
Results: Studies consistently show RFA has a success rate of 95-98% in closing the treated vein. Patients typically experience significant improvement in symptoms within days and visible improvement in the vein's appearance over 2-3 months. The recurrence rate is very low compared to older surgical approaches like vein stripping.
